2008 STAR Award Winners
Shane Bartholf, Economic
Development
Shane
Bartholf redeveloped the former Emmanuel Baptist
Church at 60 Grove Place. He created 12
three-bedroom lofts specifically marketed to Eastman
School students. Each residence has a sound-proofed
practice room. Built in 1831, the building still
maintains its historical and architectural
character. It is a jewel in Grove Place Preservation
District. Shane’s efforts helped preserve the
building, provided phenomenal apartments for
students and contributed to the overall fabric of
the successful, vibrant neighborhood.
Richard Doyle, Community
Revitalization

Richard Doyle owns Bryce & Doyle, a full-service
design/build firm. Richard purchased the former
Gruttadauria’s Bakery at 19 Jay Street and gutted
the 140-year-old building to convert it into a
3,800-square-foot luxury design living showroom,
which rivals many art galleries. By committing to
19 Jay Street, he has contributed to the
revitalization of a major part of this block and
created a destination place for others outside the
neighborhood to come see his work and appreciate the
high-end, quality craftsmanship. His efforts will
encourage other craftsman to take advantage of older
buildings and see from his example that they can not
only have a successful business but can help
strengthen a challenged neighborhood.
Mimi Freund Tilton & Peter Freund,
Historic Preservation
Mimi
and her brother, Peter, purchased and renovated the
Parry Building and the building now provides leased
commercial, retail and residential spaces. The
Parry Building was built at some time between 1851
and 1875. They have ensured that the renovation
complied with all historic preservation
requirements. The project has received awards and
acclaim from those in the field of reuse of
buildings. In addition, both Mimi and Peter have
worked hard to acclimate into the High Falls
District, to be an ally to existing property owners
and a role model for future property owners. Their
efforts have resulted in the Parry Building being a
show place in the district as well as for the City
of Rochester.
